Batman Haunted Knight Jeph Loeb Tim Sale Books

Batman: Haunted Knight serves as a neat pre-cursor to Jeph Loeb's future brilliant works more than as a wonderful volume in itself. Loeb's writing is as nice and inventive as ever. You can tell he was trying to dive deeper and deeper into Batman & Bruce Wayne's mind and heart. Included herein Batman: Haunted Knight are 3 short comics that Loeb wrote in 1996 as Halloween Batman issues. There is a very long Scarecrow story that deals with Fear, a crazy Mad Hatter story that deals with Madness, and a Penguin/Poison Ivy/Joker story/adaption/tribute to Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol that deals with Ghosts. I think I liked the Mad Hatter story the most as Loeb writes Bruce Wayne as a man who is burdens with apprehensions about being Batman in all the tales.

In all, Loeb writes well, but now as complex as he gets in Batman: Hush or Batman: The Long Halloween, but you do get glimpses into his later masterpieces starting to form here. The art is rather rough by Tim Sale, who draws slender women, but very edgy/block-y men. I love the colors, but the art leaves something to be desired. The stories are also very short and I think they just get their point across all together, but it's a very simple set of comics. Loeb really achieves more in his follow up works. I really like this comic book, but the art is not remarkable.

Batman Haunted Knight Jeph Loeb Tim Sale Books Reviews

This is one of those books that leaves me feeling like it was good but it had the potential for being great and even a classic. Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale working together is a recipe for success, they couldn't make a bad book if they tried, I don't think; but here it feels to me as if the concept and the ideas that they were going with could've used a bit more fleshing out. All three stories are interesting takes on Batman as Halloween tales, but I can't help but feel like maybe they needed more pages to fully realize them and give them a more satisfying conclusion. A worthy addition to any Batman collection, especially for those fans of the Loeb/Sale team.
Before 'The Long Halloween,' the brilliant writer/artist team of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale collaborated on three one-shot issues about Gotham City's chosen protector. I had never heard of either of them before, but I quickly came to appreciate their unique talents, their sharp and observant perspective on Batman, and their ability to craft cracking good stories.

'Haunted Kinght' collects all three of these stories, each with a different take on a Halloween theme, into a single volume.

The first story is "Fears," featuring perhaps the most natural villain of any of these tales, the Scarecrow. "Madness," the second story in the volume, features the Mad Hatter and a unique spin on Alice in Wonderland. The final story, "Ghosts," turns Bruce Wayne into a modern-day Scrooge in the All Hallows' Eve version of 'A Christmas Carol.'

Through each story, Jeph Loeb shows a deft understanding of the subtleties of the Batman character, of the nuances of Bruce Wayne's relationship with his dark half, and with the themes that are central to the mythos of the Dark Knight overall. Tim Sale showcases an equally strong grasp of the source material in his artwork - crisp, dark, moody, drawn in simple lines and high-contrast darks and lights and broad swaths of monochrome. The overarching theme of Halloween - of ghosts and monsters and things that go bump in the night - is the perfect foil for these tales.

Taken together, the three stories in 'Haunted Knight' represent a high-water mark in the long history of Batman. Rarely has a writer and artist team gotten it this right. In 'Haunted Knight,' Loeb and Sale express the Batman we all knew existed, but never dared to imagine this fully the hero who lives in darkness, the man haunted by his own history.
This is a collection of three separate and unconnected short stories. There is an art to short stories. The story must feel complete and provide a climatic conclusion much quicker than a full-length graphic novel. The first two stories do this masterfully. The first one is a must for Scarecrow fans, while also managing to develop Batman's character. It has great action and a very satisfying ending. The second story is a kidnapping tale with the Mad Hatter as the villain. The story is gripping and dedicates some time to developing the character of James Gordon. It's worth mentioning that this is a fairly creepy story at times, but I never found it to go too far. Overall I thought it was as great as the first story. The third story left me feeling mixed. It is a retelling of a Christmas Carol with Batman characters. I'm a big fan of that story, so I definitely enjoyed reading it. It just felt very rushed. I would have liked for it to have been much longer and for it have more deeply explored the awesome concept. It doesn't help that that there is a full length graphic novel with this same premise. That being said, Tim Sale's artwork and design of the characters make it worth reading alone. Overall, if you are a fan of Jeph Loeb's and Tim Sale's take on Batman, as I am, I highly recommend this book.
This is the first time I was exposed to Jeph Loeb's and Tim Sales' vision of Batman and was totally blown away. The first story, Fear, featured the Scarecrow as the main antagonist while the second, Madness, featured the Mad Hatter, were my two favorites. Both of these stories had the perfect combination of suspenseful story telling and incredible art work. The third story, Ghost, is a re-imagining of Charles Dicken's A Christmas Story which didn't do much for me. I don't recommend buying this print because of the recent announcement of the Jeph Loeb/Tim Sales Batman Omnibus (which includes Haunted Knight, Long Halloween, Dark Vitory, and Catwoman When in Rome) to be release later in 2018.
