The action starts off quickly in this military sci-fi novel, in what was supposed to be a routine exercise where a bunch of cadets provide escort and protection for a scientific team on a newly-discovered planet, but the situation goes south fast, with cadets and scientists coming under fire from the mission's own drones, then dealing with other unexpected factors, such as a deadly virus and an unknown, primitive but sentient species of natives.

17-year-old Pala de al Croix undergoes a trial of fire as she keeps order, gets her people to safety, and tries to figure out who has set them up to die and why, all the while haunted by the possibility that one the people closest to her might be a traitor.

The author adds another interesting element with the occasional short flashback chapter set prior to the mission, focusing on the conspirators and why the mission was set up.

I hesitate to reveal more without spoiling, but if you wan't a fast-paced story heavy on detailing procedures for exploring and surviving on an alien world, this is one to check out.

The only downside is the age of the characters made it suggestive of YA fiction to me, which isn't usually my genre of choice.

I am so in love with this book. I read it in one sitting, from start to finish and was completely captured. Amazing read, will literally have you begging the author for a part 2. I got the paperback copy and had to go to my Unlimited for the Ebook as well. Absolutely worth the buy and read.
This is an exciting, fast read for fans of science fiction and/or military novels. I enjoyed meeting the characters as the plot unfolded. This is definitely not one of those formula stories. I hope to meet up with Cadet Pala de la Croix again soon (just not in a dark alley, because she kicks butt)!
Pala is cadet marshal in charge of a crew on a mission to the planet Colossus. At first her team is bored by what they think is a babysitting mission while escorting scientists. But during the boring sample collection, they are attacked by their own machines and then it's a race to survive and find out who is behind the betrayal. This is a page turning mystery that has a great message about trust and doing what is right. Pala is smart, tough, independent and caring. Her crew members are great adds and the creature that lurks is awesome.
